Known problem areas

Water pump (high odds, $450–$750): Pump seal/impeller leaks coolant; typical 80-120k, so if original it is overdue. source
VVT-i actuator / cam gear (medium odds, $300–$600): Brief ~1 s knock/rattle after a cold soak from the intake VVT-i (camshaft timing) gear; Toyota TSB T-SB-0041-13 replaces the gear. Usually harmless. source
2AR-FE 2.5L pistons/rings (low odds, $2,500–$4,500): Some 2010-11 owners report oil consumption (about 1 qt per 1,000-3,000 mi).
